Brentin James Cole was born into this world to be a star. At least, that's what his family always thought. Raymond and Lisa Cole were hard working people, who raised their family in a middle class neighborhood in the suburbs of San Diego. Growing up, Brentin had a very normal childhood. Surrounded by four sisters, he was right in the middle of them. Two older, two younger. As a child, Brentin always aspired to be like his father. A good, hard working man. Although his dad wasn't a laborer, but a VP of a research company, he still worked hard. This made it easy for his mom to be a stay-at-home mother, who got to spend time with her children, especially Brentin. Seeing as he was the only boy, that made him stick out, almost like the favorite of the family. But even with his sisters, he was found as a favorite. They loved to drag him everywhere, dress him up, and take care of him. He was always well put together and taken care of, in a sea full of women in his family.
Being the only male sibling, Brentin quickly learned how to treat a female, and that it was okay to ilke female things. When he went into middle school, he found a love for drama and acting. Taking classes and performing in school plays, acting seemed to come very natural to him. He enjoyed becoming someone he wasn't, since he live such a normal life. His parents took notice of this. They observed how comfortable Brentin was on stage, and at home, how determined he was to learn lines or pretend to be on adventures in his own mind. So they enlisted the help of an acting coach, one of whom Brentin became very close with. He was an older gentleman by the name of Nick, who had many ties to the Hollywood scene. Nick would work with him every weekend. Assigning him movies to watch and exercises to practice. Quickly, this became Brentin's dream.
By the time Brentin hit high school, he'd been working with Nick for three years, flying to Los Angeles, taking auditions, and then flying back to San Diego to be in school on Monday. It was a difficult process, the rejection took a real toll on Brentin, but he had always been so ambitious and determined, even for his age. Finally, in 2004, Brentin auditioned for the role of Matthew Kidman for a movie called The Girl Next Door. He went through three processes, missing school, and working his tail off to get the part. He did. This started his career and wanting more and more to be an actor. His parents eventually pulled him out of school and let him finish by home-school and eventually getting his GED.
The next few years were extremely hard for Brentin, as he wasn't able to get much work. Everyone kept telling him how he didn't have the "right look" for the parts he auditioned for or that he didn't know the "right people". He was lucky enough to work on a couple movies, getting enough money to pay his rent and live as best as he could. No one really knew who he was, aside from small fan bases here and there, but nothing substantial. Which, he enjoyed, because being an actor wasn't for the fame, it was for the craft. He loved the feeling of being in front of a camera and portraying another person's life. Little did he know, his life was going to change. Big time.
In 2007, Brentin auditioned for the role of a guy named Edward Cullen. The name was not familiar, nor was the title of the book that the movie was about - Twilight. He'd never read it. When he went into his audition, the obliviousness of who he was took hold of the casting directors. They liked the fact that he was a bit unknown, different looking, and seemed to be oddly passionate. That's exactly what they were looking for. Brentin nailed the audition and got the call back a few days later, where he auditioned once more and finally was offered the role. He truly had no idea what he was getting himself into. Of course, Twilight became an overnight success and suddenly, Brentin was a household name. The fame happened quickly and Brentin was not ready for it, in the least.
Over the next four years, Brentin battled with wanting to act any longer. It was very hard for him to handle the fame. He was always so conflicted. On one hand, he really loved it. He reveled in having anything he wanted and being praised for a really, in his eyes, shitty movie. But on the other hand, he wished he could have his old life back where he did work because he loved it, not because he was obligated. Although he was grateful for Twilight and the way it shot his name into lights, he almost regretted it because he felt like it hindered his career more than helped. He was scared that people would only know him for this and this alone, and never take him seriously again.
In between Twilight, he was able to land other roles, which helped him get out of the mindset of Edward. He enjoyed the roles he took, but still was left unfulfilled. Once Twilight was over, he took a year long break from movies to focus on the TV series he landed called Parenthood. His role was smaller, but enjoyable, as TV was so, completely different than movies. He ended up finding a real family within the cast and they helped him realize that acting was something he wanted to stick with. After Twilight, Brentin had to search himself and find out what he wanted to do. Acting was all he ever knew and even if he gave up, he'd have nowhere else to go and nothing else to do. He would miss the craft. And his Parenthood family were the ones to thank for that.
So in 2014, he took a smaller role in the movie Fury, and then, somehow, landed the role of Four in the book series Divergent. Although he was skeptical, as this was another book series, he actually enjoyed them. This was something he was finally, truly passionate about, and deemed to be cool. Luckily, the movie did well. Maybe not as well as Twilight, but he was pleased, and happy that it was a series he could enjoy. Currently, Parenthood has just ended it's series and Brentin is focusing back on the movie scene. With Insurgent coming up, and a new role he landed in The Mountain Between Us, he's looking forward to hopefully finding better roles for himself and being more conscious of what he chooses.
